This is it, the ultimate trampoline buying guide. It is a lengthy masterpiece full of tips and aspects regarding the purchase of a trampoline. When creating this, we already knew that the aim for us isn’t the fact that someone reads it fully. Instead, we wanted to combine all the important information there is into one trampoline buying guide.

Therefore, do not feel bad about skipping sections. In fact, here’s a table of contents to help you do that:

What is a trampoline?

For many, trampolines are fun, bouncy platforms that let us defy gravity in ways we otherwise couldn’t. They are a piece of equipment that usually consist of a woven mat, springs, padding, frame, and enclosure. Trampolines allow us to explore our skills in a creative way. They are accessible since you don’t need prior skills to enjoy them.

Trampolines are often purchased by families who want to give fun and unique experiences to their children. They are an easy and thrilling way to screen-free time and exercise. But what are the benefits of owning one? Let’s have a look.

Benefits of having a Trampoline

As you may expect, there are several benefits to owning a trampoline. While we cannot go through them all in great detail (as this is a trampoline-buying guide, after all), we can list the most important ones:

  • Trampolining is a fun and accessible outdoor activity.
  • Trampolining is a great way to exercise without even noticing it.
  • Trampolining is known to release stress by releasing happy hormones as you defy gravity.
  • Trampolining is a perfect way to spend bonding time together as a family.
  • Trampolining is the epitome of screen-free activities. No phones or tablets are needed!
  • Trampolining is known to support other sports as it enhances your body awareness and coordination.

These are only some of the many benefits; if you are considering purchasing one, chances are you already have a hunch on what the best benefits for your family could be. So, next, we’ll learn about the trampoline types.

Types of Trampolines

This is perhaps where the most important information on this trampoline-buying guide starts. We’re going to discuss various trampoline types before going further into sizes and shapes. Essentially, there are four types of trampolines:

  1. Spring trampolines (most common)
  2. Bungee trampolines
  3. Springless trampolines
  4. In-ground trampolines

Based on ACON’s +27 years' of experience and rigorous Research and Development, we offer two out of the four options mentioned in this buying guide: spring trampolines and bungee trampolines.

Spring Trampolines

A closeup of trampoline springs and padding

Spring trampolines are the most common type of trampolines. They come in all price categories starting at just a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars depending on the overall quality, safety testing, research and development, and material costs that have gone into creating the given product. Together with the mat, the springs provide the bounce as they charge and discharge the energy.

ACON strives for the best bounce in the business. Recognized by many gymnasts, trickers and other advanced jumping enthusiasts as well as parents, we have 1000+ five-star reviews.

Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Most variety in selection Rust-related issues in cheap models**
Classic choice
Good to excellent bounce*
Easy maintenance

*The quality of the bounce varies depending on the manufacturer (inexpensive market trampolines vs premium trampolines)
**All ACON trampolines’ springs are made of galvanized steel and are rust-resistant

Bungee Trampolines

In addition to spring trampolines, there are bungee trampolines. These essentially are trampolines that have bungee cords instead of springs. They are primarily used for rebounders (also known as fitness trampolines). At ACON, bungee trampolines come in two size options:

These trampolines are best for those who are looking for an indoor trampoline for fitness purposes. To learn more about rebounding, see our guide ‘What is rebounding? Simple guide to trampoline exercise

Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Perfect for fitness purposes Small in comparison to outdoor trampolines
Easy to assemble
Suitable for apartments

Springless Trampolines

Next, there are springless trampolines. These trampolines are often considered innovative due to their springless nature. Oftentimes, springs are replaced by plastic rods that are under the trampoline. While claimed to be safer, the bounce on them is often quite harsh, thus hard landings are possible in case the jump is somehow unsuccessful. However, these trampolines have their own fan base, too.

NOTE: At this stage, ACON does not sell springless trampolines as we are committed to offering the best bounce without compromising on safety.

Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Oftentimes modern design High price
Plastic rods placed outside enclosure Mediocre to weak bounce
Bounce can be hard on the joints

In-ground trampolines

Next, we have to mention in-ground trampolines (also known as sunken trampolines). They are exactly as you may imagine: trampolines that you do not need to climb on as they are on the ground level. To assemble, you need to dig the hole for it and follow the assembling instructions. While some claim them to be safer, in reality, an in-ground trampoline is no safer than a regular trampoline with an enclosure.

NOTE: ACON does not offer in-ground trampolines at the moment.

Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Visually pleasing Tough assembling process
Accessible (no need for ladder) Long installation time
Drainage issues
Maintenance issues

Which Trampoline Type should I go for?

Which one should I opt for, then? For most cases, a traditional spring trampoline is the best and most versatile option. However, some have special needs (such as fitness, for which bungee cords are better) or simply prefer the alternatives available. So, as always, do your research well and see which type suits you best.

Visually pleasing Tough assembling process

Trampoline Sizes

Most often, people approach a trampoline purchase from the size perspective. We understand, after all, size matters for several reasons:

  1. Yard size: how much space do you have? Note that ACON recommends you have at least 3ft of free space on each side of the trampoline.
  2. Kids’ age: while young kids enjoy trampolines in all sizes, pre-teens and teens may prefer more space. Consider the longevity of the trampoline.
  3. Purpose: is the trampoline used for basic jumps or for more advanced jumping? Basic jumps require less space than tricks and gymnastics.

Below, you’ll find explanations of small, medium and big trampolines as well as the pros and cons of each of them.

Small Trampolines (6-10ft)

Many first-buyers are interested in purchasing a small trampoline. This makes sense; after all, they cost a bit less compared to big models. Small trampoline models fit into small places. Some of them, such as rebounders, are made for indoor use, while others are made for outdoor use.

At ACON, we offer the following small trampolines:

Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Great for beginners Weight limits
Suitable for small spaces Can quickly become ‘too small’
Less expensive

Medium Trampolines (12-14ft)

Four medium sized trampolines by acon on a white background

Medium trampolines are, well, as the name suggests, a mid-tier option between small and big models. They provide a bit more space and they tend to cost a bit more as well. They are perfect for families who are looking for a solid trampoline for family fun. They are also great if you are a bit limited in space yet you want to get the most out of your space. One of ACON’s premium trampoline, the 13 Sport HD, can also be found in this category.

At ACON, we offer the following medium trampolines:

Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Mid-tier option Price-wise close to bigger models
Good price point for many
Suitable for family fun

Big Trampolines (14-16ft)

The bigger, the better! At least when it comes to trampolines. Usually, if the space and budget allow, it’s a good idea to opt for a big trampoline. While they are designed with advanced jumping enthusiasts in mind, they are equally safe for small kids, beginners, and families. When it comes to ACON, the most premium product, the 16 Sport HD and its Performance version, can be found in this category.

At ACON, we offer the following medium trampolines:

How to find the best trampoline size for me?

This is a question that we get often. To put it briefly, consider the factors we mentioned: yard size, who’s jumping and what’s the purpose of the trampoline. Knowing the answers to these three questions will help the trampoline buying process tremendously. Also, we recommend keeping this trampoline buying guide at hand when comparing various models.

Trampoline Shapes

Trampoline size is one thing to consider when buying a trampoline. Another is the shape. Indeed, no trampoline buying guide would skip going through the shapes. This is because the shape matters when it comes to:

  1. Bounce
  2. Landscaping

Let’s see exactly how.

Round Trampolines

Most often, trampolines come in round shape. This is a classic shape for outdoor trampolines, and it can be seen in both cheap models as well as expensive premium models. Due to the popularity of the given shape, there is a great variety of sizes available, making it easy to compare various options when considering buying a trampoline. These types of trampolines are perfect for beginners and family fun.

Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Great variety in sizes Not ideal for advanced jumping
Classic design
Often more affordable (compared to other shapes

Rectangular Trampolines

If you are looking for something a bit more unique, you may opt for a rectangular trampoline. Rectangular models are best known for their better and even bounce as the bounce is even no matter where you jump on the trampoline. This makes them desirable among gymnasts and advanced trickers. Yet, they are safe and suitable also for families. ACON is particularly known for its rectangular trampolines, so we highly recommend looking into them after going through this trampoline buying guide!

Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Premium-level bounce Price
Suitable for gymnasts and advanced jumping Comes mainly in large sizes
Contemporary design

Trampolines in Other Shapes

Round and rectangular shapes are the most common ones. Naturally, there are other shapes as well, such as square and oval ones. These shapes can vary in terms of their features and bounce abilities, so we cannot say which one is better or worse for sure. One challenge that they may pose, however, is landscaping; fitting an irregular or otherwise odd shape to your yard may not be ideal.

Trampoline Safety Features

Understanding the safety features is essential when it comes to buying a trampoline. While a safe trampoline is more than just its features, the features play a major role in it. Jumping is fun only when it’s safe, which is exactly why we do not compromise on safety. Here are some of the most common safety features for trampolines that can also be found in our round and rectangular models.

Safety Enclosure and Net

If you are planning to do only one thing towards the trampoline safety, we’d say it is getting a trampoline enclosure. While we also sell our trampolines as is, most families opt for trampolines with a net. This is simply because it keeps the person jumping on it safe in case of an unsuccessful landing. See enclosed trampolines here.

Springs and Padding

Another important feature is the padding. When comparing your options, make sure that both the springs and the enclosure poles are fully covered by thick padding. This padding protects the jumper in case they land on the springs or on the pole.

Weight limits

We also want to touch upon weight limits in our trampoline buying guide. More often than not, the weight limits are ignored by parents as they are buying a trampoline for their child or children. However, we advise against such thinking, because:

  1. Your child will grow. Ideally, the trampoline you purchase is designed for years to come (like ours is). A trampoline with a high weight limit or no single-user weight limit at all will be more long-lasting.
  2. Parents can also jump on a trampoline. Our trampolines are known for their no single user weight limit policy, which is exactly why adults find them suitable for them. In fact, these types of high weight limit trampolines are suitable for the whole family, meaning that everyone can enjoy them without worry.
  3. It tells a story about the quality. Simply put, if the trampoline has a high weight limit, it means that the trampoline frame and structure are sturdy and reliable. Most ACON trampolines have been safety tested for up to 1650 lbs.

To put it simply, please check the weight limits before committing to a purchase!

Trampoline Accessories

Accessories for trampolines – what are those? Essentially, trampoline accessories are various add-ons that make trampolining fun and easier. Thus, you can categorize them into two categories:

1. Trampoline accessories for care and safety (e.g. weather cover)

2. Fun trampoline accessories (e.g. basketball hoop)

Below, we’ve listed popular accessories to get. Note that not all manufacturers sell trampoline accessories, thus it’s important to consider the value of them for your already before purchasing the trampoline itself.

Ladders

The trampoline ladders are such an obvious yet important trampoline accessory that you don’t really think about them when buying a trampoline. Many trampoline manufacturers, including ACON, tend to include ladders in their trampoline packages. Sturdy ladders are not only convenient but also safe. While ACON does include their ladders in their trampoline packages, it’s also possible to purchase them separately.

Weather Cover

Is the sun scorching hot where you live? Or do you think your trampoline might get debris and dirt on it? A weather cover is an inexpensive trampoline accessory that is often combined when purchasing a trampoline package. ACON’s weather cover keeps the trampoline clean in any weather. Available for both round and rectangular models, ACON’s weather cover is designed to keep the trampoline protected from the sun, rain, and blowing debris. The UV-treated cover is attached to the trampoline by its hooks. Easy to put on and off!

Tent

What if you could organize a sleepover on a trampoline? Turns out, it’s easier than you think. ACON’s trampoline tent has become one of the most well-known accessories. This fun yet simple accessory is great for family and friends. Why assemble a tent to the ground when you can put it on a trampoline?

Do you want to take trampolining to the next level? The basketball hoop is at this point an essential, a MUST have item. Attached to its enclosure, ACON’s basketball hoop for trampolines is available for both round and rectangular models. So, you can purchase one no matter which shape you choose! This accessory is a true best-seller among ACON’s existing customers.

Wheels

Do you think that you may need to move the trampoline around often? In that case, you could invest in a pair of trampoline wheels. These wheels will let you move a trampoline in your yard without breaking a sweat. Simply assemble them to the leg pieces of the trampoline frame. To see more info on the wheels, click here.

Trampoline Maintenance

If you want to go the extra mile when it comes to purchasing a trampoline, you can also consider the factors related to trampoline maintenance. While this is definitely not a must when buying a trampoline, some prefer to get all the knowledge in.

Anyway, to put it simply, the three core things are:

  1. Cleaning: how easy it is to clean? Are there any accessories to make the cleaning process easier (e.g. weather cover)?
  2. Repairs: does the manufacturer provide spare parts on its site (or offline)? ACON provides 100% spare part guarantee to their trampolines.
  3. Support: having knowledgeable support regarding your product is helpful when you need help with maintenance. So, make sure the trampoline brand offers support in any questions you may have. Acon provides 5 star rated, in-house customer support via email or phone. We help out with choosing the right trampoline and with any questions after the purchase regarding the trampoline's lifespan.

Trampolines during Winter

A guy jumping on a trampoline outdoors during winter

We often get questions regarding trampolines and winter. As a Nordic company, we wanted to make a product that will last in all weather conditions. This is why we’ve made a trampoline that is designed for year-round use. However, you should pay attention to the amount of snow buildup on the mat. Many tend to opt for partial disassembly to prolong the life of certain trampoline parts by disassembling and storing the enclosure, safety pad, mat, and springs for the winter. To read more about winterizing your trampoline, click here.

Trampoline Cost and Budget

And finally, we come to the question of the cost. Indeed, the cost of a trampoline can vary from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars, as mentioned earlier. As an industry leader when it comes to the best bounce, we’ve noticed that there are decent trampolines in each price range.

It all comes down to the quality and longevity of the product. A simple trampoline may bring joy for a year or two. It is a cheap alternative to a premium model that some opt for. However, if you plan to have a trampoline that is used for years (if not decades) and is of high quality, it’s better to skip the most inexpensive options.

ACON’s outdoor trampolines with net start from a bit less than 1000 CAD and go up to around 3300 CAD. This price range has great options for many, and while yes, it’s an investment, we highly believe that it’s worth it. Furthermore, the resell value of ACON trampolines is known to be good due to their durability, so if you want to sell it some day, you know you'll get a good deal in the resell market.
